Grant Green - Just A Closer Walk With Thee
I didn’t intend this to become a gospel set, so after this one I will change track a bit, but I couldn’t not post my favourite of all the swingin’ righteous Blue Note tunes. Green’s album of Gospel standards is a winner from start to finish.
Sunday Playlist - Part 4
Stanley Turrentine - Jubilee Shout
Sunday Playlist - Part 3
Freddie Roach - Wine, Wine, Wine
Another gospel infused number, this bouncy one from Roach, the wonderful Blue Note organist! I cold’ve picked any number of tracks off his ‘Good Move!’ LP, but settled for this, my favourite. Real feel good music!
Sunday Playlist - Part 2
Donald Byrd - I’m Tryin’ To Get Home
A glorious gospel blues from Byrd and full brass band with choir! Religious or not, this will have you celebrating joyously!
Your Sunday Morning Playlist - Part 1
Duke Pearson - The Phantom (Blue Note)
The perfect way to ease yourself into, or indeed out of, the day.
Possibly one of my desert island records, Nat King Cole and Let there be love. Everything about it is perfect- Cole’s vocal, George Shearing’s piano, and the perfectly placed drums and strings.
Nat King Cole- Just you just me. One of the greatest voices ever, and a brilliant jazz pianist too. Doesnt get much better than this!
Big Daddy Kane - How u get a record deal?
The Renegades - Matelot. Used to great effect in the film Le Havre.
